What is your faucet, shower or disposal doing?
Most fixture problems announce themselves the same way. Find yours below and you will know roughly what you are looking at — and whether it is usually a repair or a replacement — before you call.
Faucet · usually a repair
Drips from the spout after you turn it off
A worn cartridge, washer or seat — very often scaled up by hard water. A new cartridge usually stops it.

Handle is stiff, gritty or hard to turn
Mineral scale inside the cartridge. Forcing it wears the handle and stem — replace the cartridge before it cracks.
Faucet · repair or replace
Water in the cabinet under the sink
A tired supply line, a loose faucet connection, or a leaking drain. Close the valve under the sink and do not ignore it.

Weak flow from one faucet only
A clogged aerator or cartridge, not your water pressure. If every tap is weak, that is a different problem.

Tub spout keeps running with the shower on
The diverter inside the spout is worn. That is a tub spout replacement — no wall opening needed.

Showerhead drips or sprays sideways
Sideways spray is scale in the nozzles. A steady drip after shut-off points to the valve cartridge behind the handle.

Hums, but will not spin
Jammed. Switch it off and keep your hands out. A jam can usually be freed without a new unit.

Leaking from the bottom of the unit
An internal seal has failed and the housing cannot be resealed. Leaks at the top or side connections usually can be fixed.

Completely silent, or keeps tripping
Check the reset button and breaker first. If it keeps tripping or stays dead, the motor is usually done.

San Diego water is hard on faucets and fixtures
San Diego tap water is heavy with calcium and magnesium. Every time water evaporates off a spout or sits in a cartridge, it leaves a little behind. That scale is the quiet cause behind most of the calls on this page: gritty handles, drips that come back, aerators that clog, showerheads that spray everywhere.
The good news: scale is usually a parts problem, not a whole-faucet problem. A new cartridge, aerator or showerhead often brings a fixture back. When the body is corroded or parts are no longer made, replacement makes more sense — and we will tell you which one yours is.

A disposal gives plenty of warning before it quits: louder grinding, slower draining, a smell that will not go away, a reset button you press every week. Catch it at that stage and it is often a repair. Leave it and it tends to fail on a full sink.

Replacing or upgrading?
Check these before you buy a new faucet, fixture or disposal
Most installation surprises come from a fixture that does not fit what is already there. Two minutes with a phone camera avoids them.

Count the holes
Look under the sink: one, three or four holes? Measure the spread too — a 4-inch centerset and an 8-inch widespread are not interchangeable.

Check the clearance
A tall pull-down kitchen faucet needs room below a window or shelf, and its spout should reach the middle of the basin.

Match the shower valve
Shower and tub trim has to be made for the valve in the wall. Photograph the logo on the handle or trim plate before you shop.

Measure under the sink
For a disposal: the space below the sink, the height of the drain in the wall, and whether there is a switched outlet. More horsepower means a bigger unit.

Why do faucets in San Diego seem to wear out so fast?
Hard water. San Diego tap water carries a lot of calcium and magnesium, and it leaves scale inside cartridges, aerators and showerheads. That scale is behind most stiff handles, drips and weak flow — and the fix is often a new cartridge or aerator, not a whole new faucet.
Should I repair or replace my faucet?
Repair it if the body is sound and parts are still made for it. Replace it if the body is corroded or cracked, parts are discontinued, or it keeps failing. We explain both options before any work starts.
Can you replace shower or tub trim without opening the wall?
Usually. Handles, trim plates, tub spouts and showerheads come off from the front, as long as the new trim is made for your valve. If the valve itself has failed, we tell you before anything is opened up.
My garbage disposal hums but will not spin. What should I do?
Switch it off and keep your hands out. Most units have a hex socket in the center of the underside — turning it with the matching wrench can free a jam — and a red reset button on the bottom. Still humming, or tripping again? Call us.
Can you install a garbage disposal where there was not one before?
In many kitchens, yes. It needs a sink opening that fits a disposal flange, room under the sink, a drain connection and power. We check all four first and tell you what the install involves.
